RUMSON - Wayne’s Robert McHugh enjoyed an easy first-round victory and a long lunch break heading into this afternoon’s quarterfinals of the 45th New Jersey Boys Championship.
The top-seeded McHugh, a rising sophomore at Wayne Hills, defeated Jason Lee of Plainfield West, 7 and 6, in the first of the eight matches at Rumson CC.
McHugh, representing Darlington, had to wait until 12:15 pm. to tee off in his quarterfinal against No. 9 Randall Lazzaro of Trump Colts Neck, because Lazzaro needed 21 holes to outlast No. 8 Michael Paduano of Eagle Oaks.
The top seven seeds all won their first-round matches, including two Bergen County residents:
No. 7 Tyler Senior of Ridgewood, a rising sophomore at Northern Highlands, defeated No. 10 Ryan Pongrac of Eagle Oaks, 3 and 2; and No. 6 Alessandro Lamarca of Valley Brook, a Westwood resident and incoming freshman at powerhouse Bergen Catholic, def. No. 11 Andrew Perry of Trump Bedminster, 3 and 2.
