NJ Junior & Boys: Mayer and Apostolico win

RUMSON – Sparta’s Jimmy Apostolico won the 45th New Jersey Boys Championship, and a few minutes later Scotch Plains’ Jake Mayer won the 94th Junior title. Apostolico won the Boys crown, for ages 15 and under, with a 2 and 1 victory over Westwood’s Alessandro Lamarca at steamy Rumson CC. Apostolico, 15, a rising sophomore at Sparta who plays out of Newton, sealed the victory with a 5-foot putt for par on the par-3 17th. He also had won the par-4 16th with a par. Lamarca, 14, an incoming freshman at powerhouse Bergen Catholic who plays out of Valley Brook, won the 13th, 14th, and 15th to make it all square. Mayer, representing Plainfield, won the age 18-and-under Junior with a 1-up victory over Dylan Stein of Copper Hill. Mayer, a rising junior at Pingry who celebrates his 17th birthday on Saturday, won the 16th and 17th holes. He won the par-4 16th with a birdie, hitting his approach to within three feet. He won the par-3 17th by hitting the green and two-putting from 20 feet. Stein, 18, a Flemington resident and Hunterdon Central graduate headed for Towson, led at the turn, 2 up, and did not trail until he lost the 17th hole.
