PARAMUS – Two-time defending champ Trevor Randolph earned the No. 1 seed for match play following today’s stroke-play qualifier for the 32nd New Jersey Mid-Amateur Championship. Randolph, 42, a Franklin Lakes resident, was the first to post a 2-under-par 70 on his home course, Arcola CC, in steamy temperatures that were well in excess of 90 degrees. “Long event to go, got off to a good start, we’ll see how tomorrow goes,” said Randolph, bidding to become the first three-peat champion. Randolph shared medalist honors with Arcola’s reigning club champ, Ridgewood’s Dan Macdonald, and the reigning MGA Mid-Amateur titlist, West Caldwell’s Niall Handley of Essex Fells. Randolph ran out of energy down the stretch and finished with five birdies and three bogeys. Macdonald, 34, had four birdies and two bogeys. Handley, 43, with his son, Connor, 13, on the bag, had the cleanest round, with three birdies and one bogey. The low 16 in a starting field of more than 50 advances to tomorrow morning’s first round of match play. Two former NJSGA Amateur and Mid-Amateur champs made the cut with a score of 75 or better. Bridgewater’s Brian Komline of Black Oak, the 2012 Mid-Am champ, shot 72. Berkeley Heights’ Mike Deo of Black Oak, the 2007 Mid-Am titlist, shot 74. The list of notables to make the cut also included former New Jersey amateur titlist Mike Hyland of Little Mill, who shot 74, and Tinton Fall’s Brian Whitman of Knickerbocker, who also shot 74.
