PARAMUS—Rory McIlroy has been on a remarkable run over the last month-and-a-half. But he is off to a terrible start at The Barclays.
McIlroy shot a 4-over 40 on his opening nine holes, and is 4-over through 12, putting him in a tie for dead last as first round play continues at Ridgewood Country Club. He is nine shots off the lead held by Australia’s Steven Bowditch.
About half the 123 players in the field are on the course. The afternoon wave of tee times set to begin at noon.
McIlroy came to The Barclays on a tear, winning three consecutive tournaments—including the British Open and PGA Championship. But he has not been able to carry that momentum to Ridgewood, where the course is playing easy this morning after a light overnight rain and windless conditions. Of the 60 players who teed off this morning, 38 of them are at even par or better midway through the first round.
McIlroy double bogeyed the 12th hole, sending his round into a tailspin. He also notched bogeys at 13 and 18, going without a birdie through his first 12 holes.
